Motherf%$#@*& Mushrooms!

My husband and my two kids and I were in Wegmans grocery store in our hometown trying to get our groceries and fight the holiday crowd. My husband and I love mushrooms. It's one of the first foods I got him to eat that he had never had before when we first started dating. As we wonder toward the huge mushroom section of the store what do I see? A shelf full of DIY grow it yourself motherf%$#@*& mushrooms! I had looked at these on Amazon and considered buying them but they were like $15 and I couldn't justify it. But here in my local grocery store was the Back to the Roots brand box of grow your own mushrooms for $9.99. I was beyond freaking excited! I snatched that box up like it was the last box of Oreo's in the entire world.

The instructions seemed easy enough but I'm well known for not following directions and totally screwing up even the simplest of tasks.

The instructions say to pull open the back panel on the box and cut a plus sign in the plastic that surrounds the white mushroom growing block.

Done! Easy enough. Now it says to scrape away some of the white stuff that is on the top of the block. When I tried to scrape a bit off it comes off in big chunks so there wasn't much of an option for scraping SOME of it. I thought this is it. This is where I screwed it up.

Then you are to take the block out of the box.

And it says to soak it in a bucket of water. I used a giant soup pot. The block floats to the top so you are supposed to turn it so the plus sign is down. It is to soak like this for 8 hours. Then it is to go back in the box and you are to put it by a window but not in direct sunlight. Okay. I can do that.

4 days later and still didn't have any growth. I put a little water on it every day to keep it moist like the directions say and it was sort of becoming discolored so SOMETHING was happening but no baby mushrooms yet.

Then all of a sudden like a freaky science experiment I wake up and BAM! Tiny baby mushrooms!

Morning of Day 6! What the...

By the EVENING of Day 6 they had doubled in size!

Day 7!

Day 8!

Day 9!

And today makes day 10! They are just the cutest little things that I'll be a little sad when I eat them. Okay not really. The box says that after you harvest them you can resoak the box and try to grow a second crop so we will be doing that. I'm very excited to eat these babies. My kids and I loved waking up every day and checking on them. Even when we got home in the evening checking to see how much they had grown during the day was amazing! I felt like I could almost see them growing. I can highly recommend doing this with your kids or even just yourself. It's a fascinating process and well worth the purchase!
